Diet culture often makes us feel that everything we eat should be for a “fitness” or “wellness” goal. But there are SO many other reasons to enjoy food…
Food = good. Emotions = good. Emotional eating can be a beautiful act of self care.
Spoiler alert: You do NOT have to love your body.
Because food is about so much more than calories, energy, and macronutrients.
It won’t surprise you to learn that we’re not big fans of traditional New Year’s Resolutions. With so much focus on weight loss, body shaming, and restrictive food intake, they’re all basically just big diets in disguise, and we KNOW how harmful (and ineffective!) diets are.
Here’s the kicker: When we set resolutions aimed at changing or “fixing” our physical selves, we’re not the ones who really profit. Instead, it’s the companies and corporations who make money off of our insecurities. Yep — we’re talking gyms, juice companies, “superfood” distributors, supplement makers, and more. When we use our dollars and our time to focus on altering our bodies, we are the ones losing out.
So let’s do something really radical this year. Let’s take all the money we could have spent on weight loss pursuits and diets, and put that toward something that fills us with love, and lights us up from the inside. Let’s put that money toward our self-care, self-love, self-expression, creativity, and happiness.
We deserve it.

Take yourself on a vacation. Book the trip with that friend who can always make you laugh, or be bold and go it alone. Close your eyes and think: Where have you always wanted to travel to? Is there a way you can make it happen? If not, what about staying close to home and learning to cook a food that’s a specialty of that area? Listening to music by local bands and singers? Changing your phone background to a shot of that gorgeous beach you’ll SOMEDAY visit?
Invest in therapy. We believe that therapy is one of the best investments you can make for yourself. Through working with a therapist, we are able to better understand our patterns, triggers, and blockages in a safe environment. We are given the tools to accept ourselves more wholly and patiently. Therapy is challenging, but AWESOME, and worth the growing edges.
Try a new form of movement. We love finding new ways to move our bodies joyfully. For many of us, traditional forms of “working out” can feel triggering or just… not all that fun. Is there a form of movement that has piqued your interest? The blank slate of a new year is a great opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone and into an Irish dance lesson, judo class, or capoeira class. What do you wanted to try, but haven’t yet? You are brave enough and good enough to do it — right now, exactly as you are.
